UP NCTS REPS and Fellows Showcase Research at the 16th EASTS International Conference

The University of the Philippines National Center for Transportation Studies (UP NCTS) proudly joined the 16th International Conference of the Eastern Asia Society for Transportation Studies (EASTS), held at Sebelas Maret State University (UNS) in Surakarta, Indonesia, from September 1–4, 2025.

With the theme “Harnessing Local Wisdom and Green Technologies for a Sustainable Future in Eastern Asia’s Transport Sector,” the conference gathered academics, policymakers, and practitioners across the region to discuss solutions for safer, more inclusive, and sustainable mobility systems.

Active Participation of UP NCTS REPS and Fellows

NCTS Research and Extension Professional Staff (REPS) and Research and Extension Fellows (REFS) represented the Philippines through the presentation of multiple research papers addressing pressing transport issues in Metro Manila and beyond.

Highlighted works included:

  • Cyclist and Pedestrian Studies: Effects of pavement distresses on cyclist behavior, intersectional pedestrian experiences, and determination of bicycle lane width.
  • Equity and Accessibility: Understanding the needs of passengers with reduced mobility in rail transport, pedestrian intersectionality, and land value dynamics of rail accessibility.
  • Sustainability and Health: Investigating traffic-related air pollution at intersections under elevated structures in Metro Manila.
  • Safety and Risk Factors: Data-driven analysis of motorcycle near-crashes and informal settlements, as well as the implementation of road safety interventions for schools in the Philippines.

Policy and Institutional Capacity: Mainstreaming Traffic Impact Assessments (TIA) in urban centers and evaluating local institutions’ capacity to implement.
