Safer Schools: Pioneering Road Safety Innovation Contest

Calling all young innovators and road safety champions!

“Safer Schools” is an innovation contest organized by the UP National Center for Transportation Studies to promote road safety around schools. In the Philippines, road injuries are among the leading causes of death, especially for children aged 5 to 19 (WHO, 2019). With proper intervention, deaths due to road injuries can be prevented. Safer Schools aims to contribute to the prevention of road injuries around schools in the Philippines and promote safer streets and school environments for Filipino children.

Who can join?
Group of 3-5 Senior High School students

What will happen?
Each participating group shall:

🔴 Identify critical problem area/s in their schools where road safety can be improved.
🟡 Develop an innovation, program, or any solution to address the critical problem area/s identified. This will be refined over the next few weeks through the Safer Schools Lecture Series and Mentoring Sessions with experts in the field.
🟢 Produce a 7-minute final pitch.

Interested groups must apply by filling out this form: https://bit.ly/SaferSchools_RegForm by October 4 (Wednesday). Accepted groups shall be announced during the Lecture Series on October 7 (Saturday).

Nov 9 (Thursday) | Announcement of Winners

Prizes:
First Prize: PhP15,000
Second Prize: PhP10,000
Third Prize: PhP5,000

There will also be a PhP2,000 consolation prize for the fourth and fifth-place winners. All participating students will receive a Certificate of Participation.

This innovation contest is organized in celebration of the 30th anniversary of the UP National Center for Transportation Studies. In addition to raising awareness on road safety, promoting collaboration among our students, experts, and stakeholders, and encouraging innovation, UP NCTS aims for this endeavor to start the conversation and initiate readily implementable change that can make our participating schools safer for our students.
