The recent NC-CRTIP workshop was a crucial step towards creating a safer road environment for children in the Philippines. In a country where road crash-related injuries are the leading cause of death among youth aged 5-29, addressing this preventable problem is paramount. The National Coalition on Child Road Traffic Injury Prevention, a multi-sectoral partnership involving government agencies, civil society organizations, academia, and the private sector, has been working tirelessly, with UNICEF’s support, to protect children on Philippine roads. The workshop aimed to enhance road safety, aligning with the Philippine Road Safety Action Plan (PRSAP) 2023-2028, which envisions a society with zero road deaths. The PRSAP is structured around five pillars, including Pillar 4: Safer Road Users, where the workshop focused on child-specific interventions.
Participants from organizations such as ImagineLaw (Secretariat), DOTr, CWC, LTO, MMDA, DPWH, DOH, DTI, and CSO partners of DOTr, as well as UP NCTS, collaborated to understand systems thinking, prioritize PRSAP activities for inclusion in department budgets, determine the timeline and resources for priority objectives, and identify interventions specific to children.
Two Research, Extension, and Professional Staff (REPS) from the UP National Center for Transportation Studies (UP NCTS), Mr. Sahid Kamid and Mr. Glenn Latonero played a pivotal role in this workshop, contributing their expertise to the discussions and planning.
The NC-CRTIP is dedicated to reducing road crashes involving children, and their strategic planning and integration of child-specific interventions play a crucial part in creating a safer and more resilient road environment for the future.
