UP Diliman Brings PH Maritime Sustainability Innovation to the IMO

The University of the Philippines National Center for Transportation Studies (UP NCTS) proudly recognizes the engagement of Dr. John Justine S. Villar, UP Diliman Professor, Head of the Traffic Engineering and Management Group of UP NCTS, and Project Head, who represented the Philippine Delegation during the 84th Session of the Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC 84) held at the International Maritime Organization (IMO) Headquarters in London, United Kingdom.

During the session, Dr. Villar presented the Maritime Energy Demand Information and Analysis Software (MEDIANS), a digital platform developed through the partnership of the Maritime Industry Authority (MARINA), the Department of Science and Technology (DOST), and the University of the Philippines Diliman.

MEDIANS aims to strengthen maritime energy data collection in the Philippines by gathering energy efficiency data, measuring actual energy demand, and estimating emissions contributions from domestic ships. Through this platform, policymakers and stakeholders are provided with evidence-based information to support the development of targeted energy efficiency programs and strategies for the domestic shipping sector.

Also present during the presentation were Maritime Attaché Atty. Sharon Aledo and MARINA Director Emmanuel B. Caprio, reaffirming the Philippines’ active participation in advancing sustainable maritime policies and technologies within the IMO framework.

This engagement highlights the important role of UP Diliman and UP NCTS in contributing technical expertise to national and international initiatives on sustainable transport. The presentation of MEDIANS at MEPC 84 reflects the Philippines’ continuing commitment to innovation, sustainability, and data-driven solutions in support of greener and more efficient shipping operations.
