The University of the Philippines National Center for Transportation Studies (UP NCTS) actively participated in the 16th National Convention on Statistics (NCS) organized by the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) from October 1 to 3, 2025, in celebration of the 36th National Statistics Month.

Themed “Accelerating the SDG Pace of Progress: Mobilizing Data for All,” the convention underscored the crucial role of data in assessing the country’s progress toward the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and in designing evidence-based interventions for inclusive and sustainable development.
A Platform for Statistical Innovation and Collaboration
The triennial NCS gathered statisticians, data practitioners, researchers, members of the academe, students, and professionals from both government and private sectors. It served as a platform to exchange ideas, share experiences, and highlight recent developments in statistical research and applications.
The event featured plenary and parallel sessions, poster presentations, statistical training workshops, and the Statistical Information Management Exhibit (SIMEx). Through its Call for Papers, the PSA invited contributions on diverse topics such as economic and demographic statistics, data innovation, environmental and sustainability statistics, and infrastructure and transportation analysis.
UP NCTS Representation
The UP NCTS was represented by Mr. Sahid Kamid and Mr. Glenn Simon Latonero, both Research, Extension, and Professional Staff (REPS) from the Traffic Engineering and Management (TEM) Group and the Road Safety Research Laboratory (RSRL). Their papers focused on the use of data-driven approaches in promoting road safety and sustainable transport systems.
- Mr. Sahid Kamid presented “Motorcycle Rider Data for Safer Transport Systems: Evidence from Behavioral Surveys and Crash Experiences,” which examined behavioral and crash data to inform evidence-based motorcycle safety interventions.
- Mr. Glenn Simon Latonero presented “Safer School Zones for a Walkable Naga: Evidence from SR4S and Walkability Assessments,” which showcased how iRAP’s Star Rating for Schools (SR4S) tool and walkability audits can guide safer pedestrian environments around schools.
Dr. Jose Regin F. Regidor, UP NCTS Research and Extension Fellow (REF) and Director of the UP Institute of Civil Engineering (UP ICE), also participated in the event and served as Session Chair for the Infrastructure and Transportation Statistics session. He facilitated discussions on the application of statistical methods and data innovations that enhanced understanding of transport infrastructure and mobility planning.
Advancing Evidence-Based Transport Research
The UP NCTS’s participation in the 16th NCS reaffirms its commitment to advancing evidence-based policymaking and data-driven transport research. Through continued collaboration with government, academe, and industry partners, the Center promotes the use of statistics and innovation to develop safer, more efficient, and inclusive transportation systems across the Philippines.
