The UP National Center for Transportation Studies (UP NCTS) visited the 3M Customer Technical Center (CTC) located at Bonifacio Global City (BGC), Taguig City, and had a fascinating glimpse into the world of innovation, creativity, and practicability of 3M. The tour objective is to learn how signs are manufactured as well as learn new technologies on road signs and pavement markings.
During the visit, there was a presentation on Road Safety and hands-on use of measuring equipment like the retro reflectometer which measures the reflectivity of a road sign. The process of making road signs was shown from the design to printing to laminating to installation was explained. Then, there was a tour of the maze of rooms full of 3M innovations and products, from transportation, electronics, and healthcare to consumer goods.
There were many interested participants wherein two batches were conducted to accommodate them. Participants are composed of NCTS Research, Extension and Professional Staff (REPS), administrative staff, Research and Extension Fellows (REFs), and from the offices of UPD Campus Maintenance Office (CMO) and UPD Transportation Management Office (TMO). The first batch was held on October 23, 2023, with fifteen (15) participants and the second batch was held on March 6, 2024, with thirteen (13) participants. The participants left 3M CTC with a certificate of participation and some giveaways composed of 3M products.
The Center, specifically the Inclusive Transportation (InTra) Group, coordinated the tour. 3M is one of the major sponsors for the NCTS 30th Anniversary that was held in November 2023.
3M presence is already seen on the campus with the standard road signs. NCTS will continue discussion with 3M for future collaborations, especially on improving road safety.
